Last year, YouTube began allowing select U.S.-based creators to use AI to generate songs using prompts with the voices of artists like Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Sia, T-Pain, and Troye Sivan. Now, it has introduced a new feature in its Dream Track toolset, enabling creators to remix songs by specifying the style changes they’d like.
YouTube announced that a curated set of songs is available to creators for this remixing experiment. Test group participants can choose the “Restyle a track” option and describe the desired remix style. This generates a 30-second clip that can be incorporated into YouTube Shorts.
To create a unique genre or mood for a song, users enter their remix vision into the “Restyle a track” prompt, resulting in a customized soundtrack that reimagines the song’s mood but preserves its original vocals and lyrics.
These remixed clips will credit the original track on the Shorts video and the audio pivot page. Remixes will also have a label indicating they were modified using AI.
The Dream Track toolset, launched last November, is powered by DeepMind’s Lyria music generation model. At launch, YouTube also introduced a feature that allows users to create a track by simply humming a melody.
To address potential concerns from the music industry, YouTube announced last August that it would compensate artists and rights holders for using their work in its AI-driven tools. As part of this plan, YouTube partnered with Universal Music Group (UMG) to establish a framework for rights-holder payments.
YouTube isn’t alone in this space. Former JioSaavn executive Gaurav Sharma is developing an app called Hook, which allows users to remix songs for creating short videos.
